Description

(Preview, pending test completion)

When your charge port has live battery voltage we usually isolate this by putting an appropriate diode in series with the positive from the port.

The main problem with this is you’ll always have a voltage drop of ~600mV which results in a battery not quite charged and heat generated. Generally speaking you can adjust your charger up the same amount.

This is all well and good until you have a higher voltage 24s and above as the thermal losses are so high that the solution becomes dangerous when placed next to cells that don’t appreciate heat.

An ideal diode uses a switch to simulate a diode but will negligible voltage drop.

Example Diode Ideal Diode
Voltage 150V 150V
Continuous Current 10A 102A
Losses @ 10A (W) 6.7W 0.22W
Voltage Drop 670mV 22mV
